Frequently asked questions about security

It’s recommended to arrive at least 90 minutes prior to departure for domestic travel (within the United States) and two hours prior to departure for international travel.

TSA has a great resource for travelers who are planning ahead with their packing. Head to their “What Can I Bring?” webpage to do a search for any items you’re considering packing, and check whether they’re better to be checked or stored in your carry-on.

Be sure to read up on how to transport firearms and ammunition with TSA, and also contact your airline about its own rules.

For passengers who would like support during the screening process, TSA Cares is available upon request.

Per Transportation Security Administration (TSA), all passengers age 18 and older must show acceptable identification at the security checkpoint.

REAL ID has been required for domestic air travel since May 7, 2025. That means travelers flying within the United States must present one of the following:

  • A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID (marked with a star), or
  • Another TSA-accepted form of identification, such as a passport

For a complete list of acceptable IDs, visit TSA’s acceptable identification list.

TSA ConfirmID is an optional, paid identity verification process for travelers who arrive at the airport without a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification.

If you are unable to present acceptable ID, you may pay a $45 fee to use TSA ConfirmID. TSA will attempt to verify your identity so you may proceed through security; however, verification is not guaranteed. If TSA is unable to confirm your identity, you may not be allowed through the checkpoint and could miss your flight.
