Plan ahead – get your federally compliant Real ID before the deadline

Ohio Real ID

*EDIT: As of December 5, 2022, the REAL ID deadline has been extended to May 7, 2025. Read more about the extension on the Department of Homeland Security’s website. The information in this blog post is still relevant when it comes to acquiring your REAL ID, but please note the date has changed.

Time to tackle that dreaded to-do list item: the BMV. Real IDs are going to be required in May 2023, so get in there now and you’ll be ready for takeoff!

We’ve been asked some specifics about the Real ID and flying. The number one Real ID question we get via social media, at our TSA lines and through our Customer Experience team is, “I went to the BMV to update my ID but it hasn’t come in the mail yet. All I have is this piece of paper and my old ID. Can I still fly?”

In a word, YES! Just bring the current ID that the Ohio BMV perforated along with the temporary identification – both documents will be needed when flying until your Real ID comes in the mail.

Another question, “When exactly is the deadline?” After the May 2, 2023, deadline, Ohio driver licenses and ID cards issued prior to July 2, 2018, will not be accepted by the TSA.

And, “What documents do I need to get this ID?” Check in with the BMV before you go to renew your license to make sure you have all the necessary documents.

PRO TIP: My local BMV allowed me to virtually get in line from my car and then they texted me when it was time to go in. And, I was in there for maybe 15 minutes. Easy peasy!
