CRAA President & CEO announces retirement following major milestone in terminal project

Joe Nardone, CRAA Leadership Team

COLUMBUS, OH – Joseph R. Nardone, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA), today announced that after eight years of transformative leadership and with Board of Directors’ approval of the final bid package for new terminal construction earlier this week, he will retire.

“Following our busiest year ever and with a strong, experienced leadership team in place, I’m confident the future is bright for CRAA and the millions of travelers we serve,” said Nardone. “I’m deeply grateful to the Board for their leadership and support throughout my tenure. The next chapter of air travel in Columbus is ready for takeoff – and it’s the perfect time to close this chapter of my career.”

Appointed in December 2017 and officially joining CRAA in January 2018, Nardone brought a background in airport leadership and economic development, including serving as CEO of Detroit Metro Airport’s Wayne County Airport Authority in Michigan.

“Joe’s innovative and visionary leadership has been instrumental in turning a decades-away dream into a reality,” said Elizabeth P. Kessler, Chair of the CRAA Board. “His financial acumen, relationship with the airlines, and his commitment to giving Columbus and Ohio its first new terminal since 1958 are setting us up for future success.”

During his tenure, Nardone secured $1.2 billion in bond funding, without relying on local tax dollars, and saved $240 million to jumpstart the terminal project. Construction of the new CMH terminal, expected to open in 2029 to mark the airport’s 100th anniversary, stands as a lasting legacy of his leadership. He led the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic and played a key role in the statewide emergency response, with Rickenbacker International Airport distributing critical cargo including personal protective equipment (PPE) and infant formula. Under his leadership, CRAA now offers the most nonstop destinations in its history and welcomed a record 9.2 million passengers in 2024.

As CRAA enters this next phase, its leadership team, staff, and Board remain focused on continuing to deliver safe, reliable, and future-forward airport experiences for the region.

Nardone will remain in his role during the leadership transition to ensure continued stability and momentum, and the CRAA Board of Directors will launch a national search to identify the next President & CEO.
