Today, October 10, marks World Mental Health Day, a global initiative to raise awareness and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. At John Glenn Columbus International Airport, we believe that a smooth journey extends beyond efficient check-ins and on-time departures; it encompasses your overall wellbeing from the moment you arrive until you reach your destination.
Traveling can be an exciting adventure, but we also recognize that for some, the airport environment can trigger feelings of anxiety. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing a supportive environment, offering a range of services designed to ease your mind and enhance your travel experience.
We understand that some passengers may need extra support. Here are some of the ways we’re working to support your mental wellbeing:
- Journey Care Kits: Our Journey Care Kits include a sunflower-themed lanyard and bracelet. This international symbol is a discreet signal to our trained staff that a person wearing it may need a little extra time, patience, or assistance during their journey. The kits also contain a travel preparation checklist and information on TSA Cares, a program that allows a traveler to pre-arrange to have a TSA officer assigned to assist someone through the checkpoint screening process. To request a kit, email [email protected] 60 days before your scheduled flight.
- Interfaith meditation room: A serene escape from a busy day, our interfaith meditation room is designed for relaxation, reflection, or simply enjoying a moment of tranquility. The room, located near baggage carousel 6, is also equipped with religious texts, writings, and prayer rugs suitable for all faiths.
- Paw Force One: There’s something truly special about the unconditional love and comfort an animal can provide. As part of Paw Force One, our therapy dogs and their handlers roam the terminal, interacting with passengers along the way. They wear colorful Paw Force One vests, and passengers are encouraged to pet and play with them. Spending a few moments with these furry friends can significantly reduce stress and bring a smile to your face. All of our therapy dogs have been certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs to volunteer in the airport and in other locations where stress or anxiety may occur.
- Airport Ambassadors: Sometimes anxiety stems from uncertainty. Our friendly and knowledgeable team of volunteers is on hand to answer your questions, provide directions, and offer assistance with any aspect of your journey. Don’t hesitate to approach our information desks – we’re here to help.
- The power of music: Through our Melodies in Motion program, we transform the travel experience through an auditory journey. In coordination with the Greater Columbus Arts Council, we host musicians whose performances fill the air with melodies that soothe, uplift, and entertain. In addition, we offer a piano in our main ticketing lobby and invite passengers to sit down, play a tune, and create a moment of spontaneous harmony with fellow passengers.
Our dedication to your mental wellbeing extends far beyond World Mental Health Day. We are continuously looking for ways to improve our services and create an even more supportive environment for all travelers.
As you embark on your journey, know that we are here to support you every step of the way.
